Every year, thousands of CAF benefit recipients see their files go through an adjustment process, whether following a change in circumstances, an audit or a correction to their income details. The resulting payment does not follow the same process as a regular monthly payment: several steps take place between approval of the new calculation and the transfer appearing on a bank statement, and the time each step takes varies from case to case.

CAF adjustments and benefit recalculations: two different timelines

The term “adjustment” covers a wide range of situations. A recipient who reports a move, a change in income or the birth of a child triggers a recalculation of their benefits. The CAF may also initiate an adjustment following an automated audit or a cross-check of records with the tax authorities.

In all cases, the CAF has a legal deadline of two months to process a complete file, starting from the date it receives all the required documents. This deadline is set out in the French Social Security Code. If it is exceeded, the recipient can refer the matter to the amicable appeals commission.

Anyone who starts a CAF adjustment process with an understanding of the administrative steps involved will have a clearer idea of when to expect payment. The recalculation may result in a back payment (an amount owed to the recipient) or an overpayment (an amount to be repaid). An audit does not necessarily mean bad news.

CAF payment times after an adjustment: what happens in practice

Once the file has been processed and the new benefit amount calculated, payment follows the CAF payment schedule. Benefits are transferred to banks around the 5th of each month, for the previous month. If the 5th falls on a weekend or public holiday, the transfer is brought forward to the preceding business day.

People often confuse the date the CAF makes a payment with the date it reaches their account. The recipient portal may show the status “paid” even though the transfer has not yet appeared on the bank statement. This delay is normal.

Bank processing time after a CAF transfer

After the CAF makes the transfer, each bank applies its own processing time. Most recipients see the money credited to their account within one to three business days. This depends on the bank, not the CAF itself.

For a back payment resulting from an adjustment, the transfer follows the same process as a regular monthly payment. There is no expedited procedure for adjustments, except in exceptional cases handled urgently by an adviser.

Missing documents and incomplete files: the main cause of delays

Processing times published by each local CAF office are local averages that are updated periodically. They do not guarantee how long an individual file will take to process. The most important factor is whether the file is complete when it is submitted.

An incomplete file holds up processing before the legal deadline even begins. The CAF considers the two-month period to start when it receives the complete file, not when the first submission is sent.

The most common issues include:

  • A rent certificate from the landlord or property manager, required to calculate housing benefit (APL) and often sent late by the landlord
  • Illegible or incomplete proof of income, which prompts a request for resubmission and can add several weeks to processing time
  • A bank account change that has not been recorded correctly, causing the bank to reject the transfer and requiring the CAF to issue payment again in the next payment cycle
  • Missed quarterly declarations for RSA or the activity bonus, which automatically suspend payments

The CAF reminds recipients that benefits are based on the information they provide. Reporting a change in circumstances promptly and checking your details in your personal account reduces the risk of a late adjustment or a subsequent correction.

CAF administrative mediation: an option if the delay becomes unreasonable

If a file remains stalled despite follow-ups, administrative mediation is a little-known option. The CAF describes it as a free, impartial and confidential process, available after an initial attempt to resolve the issue has failed to produce a satisfactory response.

This mediation does not replace the usual appeals process (the amicable appeals commission, followed by the courts). It is an additional option for resolving situations where discussions with the usual service have not led to a solution.

Tracking an adjustment in the recipient portal

The “Mon Compte” area on caf.fr lets you track the progress of your file. The status “file being processed” means the application has been received, but checks (identity, income, rent and household composition) are not yet complete.

The status changes to “benefit calculated” before the payment is actually made, which will happen in the next payment cycle. If the adjustment is approved after payments for the current month have been scheduled, payment is postponed until the following month.

Processing times vary from one local CAF office to another. Checking the times published by your own office, available through the recipient portal, gives a more reliable estimate than a nationwide range. These averages change depending on seasonal workloads, particularly at the start of the year, when benefits are automatically recalculated based on tax income.

The payment schedule, a complete file and bank processing time are three consecutive links in the chain. A delay at any one stage automatically pushes back the final payment date. Checking your file in the recipient portal is the most direct way to find out where any hold-up is occurring.
